People from all walks of life showed their solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement – even our beloved celebrities. Today, we are here to list down some of the celebrities who have gone and beyond to express their support in this fight for justice and equality.
Billie Eilish
First is Billie Eilish. The GEN Z singer-songwriter has been actively using her social media platform to raise awareness about the movement. In a passionate Instagram post last May 30, she wrote, “If all lives matter, why are black people killed for just being black? Why are immigrants persecuted? Why are white people given opportunities that people of other races aren’t?”.
In addition to her social media posts, the “Bad Guy” hit-maker has also been participating in peaceful protests in Los Angeles. She has also been seen driving her car in the streets with taped cardboard signs containing messages like: “Black Lives Matter” and “I can’t breathe” which as we know was George Floyd’s last words.
John Boyega
Another actor who showed solidarity in the Black Lives movement is John Boyega. The Star Wars actor attended a Black Lives Matter Protest in London and gave a moving speech about systemic racism and police brutality. Boyega said to crowd and protesters: “Black lives have always mattered. We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting”. He later thanked fans on his Instagram page for the “love and support” he had received since his speech. He wrote, “I’ll continue to use my platform to fight against the injustices and inequalities in our community, no matter what”.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner
Power couple Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner also stood up and participated in a peaceful demonstration and protest in Los Angeles for Black Lives Matter. They have also used their social media platforms to show their solidarity for the movement – even posting speeches and images from the rallies. One comment from Instagram asked Turner why she was still protesting despite the arrest of the police officers responsible for George Floyd’s death, on which she responded, “This isn’t just about those 4 cops, this is about Breonna Taylor, this is about Trayvon Martin, this is about Eric Garner, this is about the systemic racism that black people have faced for hundreds and hundreds of years. This is about changing the system. Justice will be done when society reflects our beliefs that we are all equal. Until then, there should be no peace”.
Harry Styles
The “Watermelon Sugar” singer, Harry Styles also joined the listed of celebrities who marched down the streets to fight against police brutality and racism. Last June 3, he was spotted by fans wearing sunglasses and mask, as he joined the Los Angeles protest with his friends. Prior to this, he has already voiced out that merely not being racist is not enough. He explained this sentiment on his social media platform saying, “I do things every day without fear, because I am privileged, and I am privileged every day because I am white. Being not racist is not enough, we must be anti racist. Social change is enacted when a society mobilizes. I stand in solidarity with all of those protesting. I’m donating to help post bail for arrested organizers. Look inwards, educate yourself and others. LISTEN, READ, SHARE, DONATE and VOTE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. BLACK LIVES MATTER”.
Ariana Grande
Time and time again, Ariana Grande proved to us that she is more than just a famed popstar, she is also one of the most caring artists of today’s generation. From organizing the One Love Manchester benefit concert to commemorate the lives lost at her previous concert, she’s now extending her support to the Black Lives Matter Movement. She has participated in a protest in Los Angeles and she voiced out her concern regarding the lack of media coverage at the said demonstration. She said in a tweet, “hours and miles of peaceful protesting yesterday that got little to no coverage. all throughout beverly hills and west hollywood we chanted, people beeped and cheered along. She added, “we were passionate, we were loud, we were loving. cover this too please. #BLACKLIVESMATTER”.
Aside from joining the ongoing protest, she has also shared helpful resources on her Instagram account in the hopes of encouraging fans to join the fight against police brutality and racism. She encouraged her followers to stay updated, sign petitions, donate, and continue sharing links and resources to better support the movement.
